How to Fight Exhaustion During and After a Workout

Working out is a great way to increase your fitness and health. It can, however, be exhausting. To help fight exhaustion during and after a workout you can eat complex carbs and protein, drink more water, and get proper sleep.

Eat Complex Carbs and Protein

Proper nutrition is important for your exercise routine. If you don’t get enough of the right nutrients, you can end up feeling exhausted both during and after your workouts. After your workout is an important time to fight fatigue, which you can accomplish by eating complex carbs and protein. Complex carbs are broken down by the body and used to replenish energy stores. Protein is broken down and utilized to help repair and build your muscles. If you have a particularly long exercise session you can also utilize carbs and protein during your workout to keep your energy up and finish your workout.

Drink More Water

When you work out you sweat, which leads to water loss. You need to drink water to counteract this water loss, or you risk being dehydrated. If you become dehydrated during your workout it can leave you feeling sluggish and affect your performance. If you start to notice exhaustion during your workout, sometimes all it takes is a drink of water. Water also has other benefits for your health. Unfiltered water contains vital minerals that are good for your teeth.

Get Proper Sleep

Not getting adequate recovery from the workout prior can contribute to exhaustion. One way your body recovers from your workout is by getting enough sleep, preferably 8 hours each night. This allows your body to repair the muscles you work on during your exercise. Getting enough sleep helps your body produce growth hormone which helps you build and maintain lean muscle. If you are still feeling tired during and after workouts, you can utilize naps. A 15-20 minute nap is all that is recommended to help you gain more energy without leaving you feeling groggy.

The quality of your workouts is determined by more than just your time in the gym. Many of your daily habits can have a profound effect on your energy, therefore affect your workouts and your health. If you find that you are exhausted during or after workouts, look to other areas and habits of your life to see if there is something you can improve.
