Everyone knows that regular exercise is good for them. It helps you lose weight, strengthens your bones and muscles, and it even improves your mental health. However, many people are left wondering just how much they actually need to exercise.
Figure Out Your Goals
Not everyone has the same body, so they will all have different goals. When figuring out how much exercise you need, you need to determine what outcome you’re looking for and what you need in order to reach your goal. If you’re trying to tone your muscles, you’ll likely focus on weight-lifting or muscle-strengthening exercises.
With these types of exercises, you can’t do them for long stretches of time. Aerobic exercise on the other hand can be done for longer periods. So, depending on your goals, you’ll be exercising for different amounts of time. When you set fitness goals, make sure they are realistic and achievable. It’s also helpful to focus on one goal at a time.
Use Health Guidelines
Over time, you’ll find a good pattern and rhythm for how much you need to exercise. As you get started though, you can begin by following common health guidelines. Most adults should get 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. This level of exercise is a good way to maintain your body’s health. You can split up these 150 minutes throughout the week however you’d like. Generally, this equates to about 30 minutes of exercise a day. Examples of moderate activity include brisk walking, biking on a flat road, or playing tennis.
Test Your Limits
Everyone starts out at different fitness levels. If you want to know how much exercise you should be getting, try testing out your limits. When you work out, see how long you can go before getting tired. It’s also helpful to measure the intensity of your workout as well. You want to find a balance between pushing yourself and overworking yourself. Working too hard can actually have negative effects on your body and it can make it harder to continue exercising. After doing a few workouts, you can determine how much exercise it takes to make you tired. Slowly begin increasing this amount and you’ll get closer to your fitness goals.
Exercise does a lot for your body. Everyone needs different amounts of exercise in order to stay healthy and reach their goals. It may take some time to figure out how much you specifically need.
